Church of the Incarnation, Penfield, NY, Assistant to the Rector
1968-70
Incarnation was founded in 1957 as a mission of St. Paul's, Rochester. The Rev. James P. Metzger hired me as his first assistant. He had been the first assistant in the parish under its founding rector who died in 2006. The rest of us are retired.
I was oversaw two Sunday Schools with about 350 students total. The classes met in the most prodigously crowded conditions imaginable. Father Metzger was very keen on visiting. Between us we made more than 500 parish visits a year as well as daily visiting in the 5 local hospitals.
During my time at Incarnation I designed a two year confirmation course which met 30 weeks a year. It was astonishingly well received. I heard from the parents of one of my students in 1998 that he is a regular communicant of the Episcopal Church and credits that confirmation class for it!
